In the nineteenth century, in Japan, the American journalist Christopher is searching for Komomo, the missing love of his life whom he had abandoned years before, promising to return to her later. He arrives on a shady island populated by whores and caftans, where he meets a deformed prostitute who informs him that his beloved Komomo has died. He drinks sake with her and later asks her to tell him about her life. The prostitute tells a dark and cruel story about her life and Komomo's tragic fate.
