Henri Boulanger is laid off from his job after fifteen years of service with the company. In shock, he makes an attempt on his own life, but is unable to complete it. He then hires a contract assassin in a sleazy pub to murder him at some undetermined point in the distant future. But, almost immediately, he meets and falls in love with Margaret, a flower seller, which causes Henri to realize that his existence does, after all, have some significance. The pub, however, has been demolished, and there is no way for him to contact the assailant when he returns to cancel the contract...
