In the present, artist Tom Warshaw reflects on his traumatic adolescence. In 1973, Tom, a 13-year-old growing up in New York City, hangs out with Pappass, a mentally disabled man. Tom is left to his own devices because his mother is suffering from depression as a result of her husband's death. When Tom develops feelings for his classmate Melissa, Pappass feels abandoned and begins acting erratically.
