5000 years ago, India began capturing and taming elephants for battle, parades, and religion. Makbul still grows up in frequent touch with wild and farmed elephants in his southern India hamlet. Makbul goes against his mother's wishes to become a mahout, or government-employed elephant handler. When Vikrama is born, Makbul cares for him.
