John Hall is a vagrant who finds himself in a little town in the state of Maine. He is out of work and decides to apply for a position at the most successful business in the community: a major textile mill. He is hired to work the "graveyard shift," which is from roughly midnight to morning, and he is tasked with clearing out the basement, along with a few other people, as part of the job. As they progress farther beneath, they come face to face with an unspeakable beast that is set on consuming them all. This duty appears to be straightforward to the employees at first.
