When Duffy Bergman, a New York cartoonist, meets Meg Lloyd, a gourmet chef, he finds the love of his life, and they marry – but love isn't enough to keep them happy. Meg decides she wants to have a baby, which initially frightens Duffy but quickly becomes his top priority as well. When they are unable to have a child, Meg focuses on her career, and the two gradually drift apart, eventually separating. Later, while speaking at a Delta Gamma sorority convention, Duffy reveals that the Delta Gamma girls have always been his fantasy girls – his Love Goddesses. There he meets Daphne Delillo, a young and free-spirited Delta Gamma girl. When Daphne relocates to New York to work as a network sports reporter, their mutual attraction, as well as Daphne's spontaneity, ignite an exciting new relationship for Duffy. Duffy must now decide which relationship is more valuable to him: the one he has given up or the one he has always wanted.
