the early part of the 18th century Jonathan Green, a cartographer, embarks on a research journey that takes him from Europe to East Asia. After traveling through Transylvania and over the Carpathian Mountains, he finds himself in a little settlement that is surrounded on all sides by thick forests that are impossible to navigate. Nothing but random events and a dense fog could have led him to this ill-fated location. The folks who dwell here are completely different from any other people the traveler has ever encountered before. The villagers, having created a deep moat to defend themselves from the rest of the world, share a mistaken notion that they might rescue themselves from evil. Unfortunately for them, they fail to realize that evil has established its nest in their souls and is waiting for an opportunity to leak forth into the world.
