After spent 50 years in jail, a repentant high-profile serial killer is hired by a homicide investigator to track down a vicious copycat who has been stealing his victims' identities. A 70-year-old man named Charlie Sorland is conditionally released from death row in 2003 because of his good behavior and contributions to society after spending 50 years for a series of murders. Following Charlie's release from prison and his commitment to deterring others from violence, impressionable Jason Lutra becomes aware of the narrative and develops an unhealthy interest in Charlie, which leads to Jason imitating Charlie's behavior in the past. As new killings begin to occur using Charlie's old method, Detective Brent Lowe notices the parallels and enlists Charlie's assistance in infiltrating the mind of his own copycat killer, promising Charlie a full pardon if he is successful.
