While crossing the desert, a frontier scout named Jess Remsberg saves Ellen Grange from a pursuing gang of Apaches and returns her to her husband, Willard Grange, who had been separated from her for some time. He has a contract to serve as a scout for an Army cavalry unit in the field. Willard, Ellen, and her young boy, as well as horse trader Toller, a veteran of the 10th Cavalry, are accompanying them on the journey. It is trapped in a gorge by Chata, an Apache chief who also happens to be the grandpa of Ellen's child. Willard has been apprehended and is being tortured. Jess runs away and arrives just in time to bring in reinforcements and rescue the day. It is revealed to Jess that the man he has been tracking down is none other than Willard Grange himself.
