Double Suicide of Sonezaki

Suicide is a common form of protest in Japan. In 1703, a new merchant class transforms samurai society. Some unscrupulous persons took advantage of these alterations before the social order was re-created. In this story, a merchant pays his clerk with an I.O.U. When the clerk brings the paper to the merchant at the agreed upon hour, the guy explodes into a rage, pretending he never penned it and accusing the clerk of trying to scam him. Then he sets his henchmen on the clerk to bash him.
