Easy Rawlins is an unemployed black World War II veteran in late 1940s Los Angeles with little career prospects. Easy meets DeWitt Albright, a strange white man looking for someone to look into the disappearance of a missing white woman named Daphne Monet, whom he believes is hiding out in one of the city's black jazz clubs, at a pub. Easy takes the work because he needs money and is behind on his bills, but he quickly finds himself in over his head.
