Frankie, who is nine years old, and his single mother, Lizzie, have been constantly on the move for as long as he can remember, most recently settling in a Scottish coastal town. Lizzie has told her deaf kid that his father is away at sea aboard the HMS Accra in order to shield him from the truth that they have fled from his father. Every few weeks, Lizzie sends Frankie a letter purporting to be from his father and detailing his travels in foreign locations.
