Three friends get together and bury a box, with the agreement that it will be opened at midnight on the night of their high school graduation. Things quickly start to alter in the small Georgia town where they live. A pregnant misfit, a prom queen engaged to be married, and a tiny miss flawless are all among the characters in this story. During their celebration of graduation, they open the box and have a chat with one another. All of a sudden, one of them brings up the subject of her going to Los Angeles to audition for a record label contract. They all agree to go together and set off on their journey. They set out on the trek with a young man named Ben, who they met on the route. He is feared by all of them when one of them spreads rumors about him possibly being a homicidal maniac within the group. When they arrive in Los Angeles, Lucy falls in love with Ben and, despite her father's objections, she decides to stay and attend the audition.
