After World War I, Renier, a widower, went back to his estate Horlebecq. His only diversion is writing letters to Rolande, a Parisian he met during the war. Even though his family wants him to marry his sister-in-law Emily, Renier is still crazy about Rolande and even goes to Paris to see her. She manages to persuade him to put a lot of money into the "Academie de Beauté" in Paris. Horlebecq is full of unbearable tensions because of his risky investments and breaking up with Emily.
