George McCray, 13, is living with his grandparents on their Kansas farm while grieving the death of his father in a tractor accident. George misses his mother, Jill, who has moved to Minnesota to deal with her grief, but they will be reunited at Christmas. George feels useful on the farm, where he assists his grateful grandfather Bo with daily chores and comforts his grandmother Cora. He's also made friends with Mary Ann and grown fond of Tucker, the smart and friendly dog that the McCrays take in when his troubled owner Frank Thorne is arrested.
