Nasser-Ali, a gifted musician, loses his desire to life after his wife, during a quarrel, breaks his cherished violin. He looks for a substitute but can't find one who sounds just like him, so he decides to die. He succeeds eight days later. This is the story of his final week, with flashbacks and flash forwards to his past life and the futures of his children. A naked Sophia Loren and the angel of death, Azarel, make appearances as well. We understand why he opted to terminate his life and the gravity of his decision as we watch his life unfold.
