Jack Thornton is having difficulty earning enough money playing cards to fund his trip to Alaska's gold fields. His fortunes alter when he spends $250 for Buck, a half-wolf sled dog, to protect him from being shot by an arrogant Englishman also heading to the Yukon. While traveling to the Yukon with Shorty Houlihan–who served time in prison for opening another man's letter containing a map of where gold can be located–Jack saves a woman whose husband was the addressee of that letter. Buck assists Jack in winning a $1,000 wager in order to obtain the goods he requires. And on one occasion, while Jack and Claire Blake pet Buck, their fingers come into contact.
