In New York City in the 1920s, this movie tells the story of an idealistic young playwright named David Shayne. Nick Valenti, a gangster, finally gives money to the project's producer, Julian Marx. The catch is that Nick's girlfriend Olive Neal gets the part of a psychiatrist, and Olive is a bimbo who could never pass for a psychiatrist and is also a terrible actress. Agreeing to this first compromise is the first step to Broadway's complete seduction of David, who ignores his longtime girlfriend Ellen. David also has to deal with Warner Purcell, the leading man, who can't stop eating, Helen Sinclair, the grand dame, who wants her part to be more exciting, and Cheech, Olive's meddling hitman/bodyguard. At some point, the playwright will have to decide which is more important: art or life.
