Michael Jackson is king in 1984, even in Waihau Bay, New Zealand. Boy is an 11-year-old boy who lives on a farm with his grandmother, a goat, and his younger brother, Rocky (who thinks he has magic powers). Boy's father, Alamein, appears out of nowhere shortly after Gran leaves for a week. After imagining a heroic version of his father during his father's absence, Boy is confronted with the real version—an inept hoodlum who has returned to find a bag of money he buried years before. This is where the goat comes in.
