She and her father relocate to a small Florida town after being abandoned by her mother when she was three years old. She finds an orphaned puppy, whom she names Winn-Dixie, and brings him home with her. Because of the friendship that develops between the girl and her unusual companion, the people of a little Florida town are brought together, and the girl's own problematic relationship with her father is healed as well.
