Mary Jane is a young biologist who studies lepidoptery, which is the study of moths and butterflies. She doesn't have the perfect life, but she does have what she thinks is the perfect child. There is a terrible accident, and Mary Jane's whole world is turned upside down. She flees the troubled "real world" and starts a project alone in the woods. Mary Jane starts to see things that aren't normal in the isolated and surreal landscape. In the end, Mary Jane and what's left of her family have to pay for the chance to be a mother again.
