Redmond Barry is a young farm lad living in a small village in Ireland during the eighteenth century. He is head over heels in love with his cousin Nora Brady. In response to Nora's engagement to the British Captain John Quin, Barry issues an open challenge to a fight with pistols. He prevails in the fight and makes his way to Dublin, but on the way there he is robbed. Seeing no other way out of his predicament, Barry enlists in the British Army to fight in the Seven Years War.
