At the conclusion of World War II, a National Guard infantry company is tasked with the responsibility of establishing artillery observation positions in a critical location. Lt. Costa (Jack Palance) is well aware that Capt. Cooney (Eddie Albert) is only in command due to "connections" he made in the United States.
