Cleopatra, the Egyptian Queen, wagers against Julius Caesar, the Roman Emperor, that her people are still magnificent, even though the era of the Pharaohs is past. She promises (against all reasoning) to build Caesar a new palace in three months. Edifis receives this ambiguous award since all of her architects are either too busy or too conservative in style. He must construct the palace and be covered in gold, or else he will be eaten by crocodiles. Edifis seeks the assistance of an old friend: the famous Druid Getafix of Gaul, who concocts a magical potion that grants supernatural strength. Asterix and Obelix accompany the old Druid on his voyage to Egypt to aid and defend him. When Julius Caesar learns that the project is a success, he has the construction site stormed by his forces in order to win the bet and avoid embarrassment. But, like the local pirates, he's underestimated Asterix and Obelix.
