Charlotte Castang is a 13-year-old girl from a working-class family. She lives in a dull, run-down neighborhood and is ready to grow up. Her mother died while she was being born, and now she lives with her crude brother and a father who is busy with other things. Lulu, a sick 10-year-old girl, is her only friend, but she doesn't like her. Charlotte doesn't like people, is bored, and wants a better life.
