Sir Robert Chiltern is a successful Government minister who is well-off and has a loving wife. All of this is jeopardized when Mrs Cheveley arrives in London with damning evidence of a past wrongdoing. Sir Robert seeks assistance from his friend Lord Goring, an apparently idle philanderer and his father's despair. Goring is familiar with the lady of old, and he takes the whole thing very seriously.
