Francis Ashby, a senior Oxford don on solitary vacation in the Alps, meets American Caroline and her companion Elinor, the blooming Irish-American girl she adopted years ago. Ashby finds that he enjoys their company, especially Elinor's, and both ladies are attracted to him. When they arrive unannounced at Oxford, he is nonetheless surprised. The College prohibits women from entering its grounds, let alone its rooms. In fact, the esteemed Fellows frown against any relationship, no matter how benign.
