All the Mornings of the World

The time period is the latter part of the 17th century. When the viola da gamba musician, Monsieur de Sainte Colombe, returns home after being away, he learns that his wife passed dead while he was gone. As a way to cope with his loss, he constructs a modest home in the backyard of his property and moves in there with his two young daughters, Madeleine and Toinette. There, he isolates himself from the rest of the world and devotes his life to music. The rumor about him and his music spreads widely, and it even reaches the court of Louis XIV, who wants him to play in Lully's orchestra at his court, but Monsieur de Sainte Colombe refuses to let him perform there. One day, a young man by the name of Marin Marais comes to see him with a request: he would like to learn how to play the violin.
