There are two things Mitchell Goosen likes to do when he's free: surf and rollerblade. He is 16 or 17. Yet, his parents, who are both zoologists, were given a grant to go to Australia and work there. Mitchell couldn't go with them. In Cincinnati, Ohio, his aunt, uncle, and cousin live. So, he is sent there to stay with his family. When he gets there, he meets his cousin, Wiley, who is also his roommate for the next six months. It's then that Mitchell goes to school and ends up getting into a fight with the high school hockey players. Because of the guys, Mitchell and Wiley have to go through torture for weeks on end. Then, the big guys and Mitchell and Wiley have to learn how to get along so they can try to beat their Central High School rivals in a competition down Devil's Backbone, which is a long way down.
