A young boy and a talented stray dog with exceptional basketball skills become fast friends. Josh Framm, 12, moves to Fernfield, Washington, with his family after his father dies in an accident. Josh, the new kid in town, has no friends and is too shy to try out for the school basketball team. Instead, he prefers to practice alone on an abandoned court, where he meets Buddy, a runaway golden retriever. Josh is astounded to discover that Buddy enjoys basketball...that he plays basketball...and that he is GOOD at it! Josh eventually makes the school team, and Buddy is named Team Mascot. Josh and Buddy become the halftime show's stars. Buddy's half-time performance attracts media attention. Unfortunately, when Buddy's mean former owner, Norm Snively, comes up with a scheme to capitalize on the pup's celebrity, it appears that they will be separated.
