Momo, the daughter of a recently deceased father, moves with her mother from Tokyo to the distant Japanese island of Shio, clinging to an unfinished letter. As soon as they get there, she starts exploring her new surroundings, making friends with the local kids and picking up on their habits and customs. In no time, strange things begin to happen on the island, which had been peaceful before. In the attic of their house, Momo has been hearing strange mumblings every morning after her mother departs for work. Orchards have been found looted. Prized treasures have disappeared. Momo's mother doesn't believe her about the strange things that are happening, so she goes on a strange and supernatural adventure to find out what's going on. This leads her to a group of three troublesome imps: the flatulent lizard Kawa, the childlike Mame, and their hulking leader Iwa. Aside from learning more about the island's history, Momo discovers a connection between her trip there and her father's mystery letter.
