At the start of the 20th century, China is in a state of crisis. The country is split into warring groups, people are starving, and recent political reforms have made things worse, not better. After 250 years of unquestioned power, the ruling Qing Dynasty, which is led by a seven-year-old emperor, and his ruthless mother, Empress Dowager Longyu, are completely out of touch with what's going on in the world. Huang Xing has just come back from Japan, where he studied the art of modern warfare. When he sees his country falling apart, he feels he has no choice but to pick up a sword.
