This drama is based on the historical book of the same name and depicts Cromwell's climb to become Henry VIII's closest advisor. In the 1520s, England is on the verge of catastrophe. Civil conflict could destroy the nation if the King dies without a male heir. Henry VIII desires to annul his twenty-year marriage in order to wed Anne Boleyn. He is opposed by the Pope and most of Europe. Thomas Cromwell, a completely unique individual, a charmer and a bully, idealist and opportunist, shrewd at reading people, and ruthlessly ambitious, walks into this impasse. Henry, however, is unstable: one day he might be compassionate, and the next he can be violent. Cromwell assists him in defeating the enemy, but at what cost will he ultimately prevail?
