American television network TNT aired the first two seasons of the show Witchblade from 2001 to 2002. The series is adapted from the Witchblade comic book series, and it was preceded by a pilot film that was released in August of the year 2000. Ralph Hemecker, Marc Silvestri, and J.D. Zeik each contributed to the writing of a few of the episodes. Yancy Butler played the role of Sara Pezzini, Anthony Cistaro played the role of Kenneth Irons, David Chokachi played the role of Jake McCartey, Eric Etebari played the role of Ian Nottingham, Will Yun Lee played the role of Danny Woo, Conrad Dunn played Tommy Gallo, Kenneth Welsh played Joe Siri, and John Hensley played Gabriel Bowman, amongst many other roles. There was speculation that the cancellation of the show was tied to Butler attending rehab for alcoholism, which led to the belief that the show was canceled in September 2002, despite the fact that it had received positive reviews from critics and was well-liked by audiences. The television show was broadcast on TNT for a total of 24 episodes over the course of two seasons. The pilot episode was shown on June 12, 2001, and the series finale was broadcast on August 26, 2002. Despite the fact that it was canceled, Witchblade managed to earn a spot in the seventh spot on the list of the Top 10 Basic Cable Dramas for 2002. It was and still is the highest rated television show that was ever canceled, according to Top Cow editor Matt Hawkins. The Witchblade TV series was canceled because its lead actress, Yancy Butler, was an alcoholic and checked herself into a rehabilitation center.
