Wild America is a documentary television series that focuses on North America's wild creatures and wild lands. Marty Stouffer had created numerous full-length documentaries by the mid-1970s. At the time, he approached Public Broadcasting Service programming managers about creating a half-hour wildlife show, the first of its kind to focus solely on the flora and animals of North America. In1982, PBS acquired the rights to broadcast Marty Stouffer's show Wild America. The show went on to become one of PBS's most popular, recognized for its honest presentation of nature as well as its extensive use of film techniques such as slow motion and close-ups. PBS paid Stouffer $135,000 for each show. The show was on the air from 1982 through 1994. The series is no longer on PBS, but reruns may still be shown on commercial television across much of the United States. Wild America, a full-length feature film produced by Warner Brothers in1997, was partially based on the biographical narrative of Marty Stouffer and his brothers, Mark and Marshall.
