The Octonauts is a British children's television programme created by Silvergate Media for Cbeebies, the BBC's children's channel. Brown Bag Films animated the series in Ireland, but it features British voice actors. The TV show is based on Vicki Wong and Michael C. Murphy of Meomi Design Inc.'s American-Canadian children's books. The Octonauts follows an underwater exploring crew made up of stylised anthropomorphic animals, a group of eight adventurers who live in an undersea base known as the Octopod, from which they embark on underwater excursions using a fleet of aquatic vehicles. The theme is a mix of Star Trek and Thunderbirds, with a touch of Jacques Cousteau thrown in for good measure. The strange creatures and settings that the crew discover are actual marine animals in their natural habitats, despite the fact that the technology is science fiction.
