The Andy Griffith Show is an American comedy that aired from October 3, 1960 through April 1, 1968 on CBS. Andy Griffith portrays the widowed sheriff of the fictitious North Carolina town of Mayberry. His life is hampered by an incompetent but well-intentioned deputy named Barney Fife, a spinster aunt and housekeeper named Aunt Bee, and a brilliant little son named Opie. His life is further complicated by local scoundrels, incompetent buddies, and moody ladies. Regarding the time period of the show, Andy Griffith noted in a Today Show interview: "Even though we never said it, and even though it was filmed in the 1960s, it had a 1930s vibe. It was reminiscent of a bygone era when we were doing it." The series never fell below seventh place in the Nielsen ratings and finished its final season at number one. TV Guide has named it as the ninth-best show in the history of American television. During the eight-season span of the series, neither Griffith nor the show won any honors, while co-stars Knotts and Bavier won a total of six Emmys. The sitcom generated its own spin-off series, Gomer Pyle, U.S.C., as well as a sequel series, Mayberry R.F.D., and a reunion telefilm, Return to Mayberry.
