They are an eccentric wealthy family who take pleasure in anything grotesque and macabre, and they are never truly conscious that people find them odd or terrifying. They are a satirical inversion of the ideal of the perfect nuclear family in the United States of America. In point of fact, they are frequently shaken to their very core by "regular" people. Charles Addams, an American cartoonist, is the mind behind the popular Addams Family comic strip.
