Mary Ann comes back to San Francisco in the present day to see her daughter and ex-husband. It has been 20 years since she left them to pursue her career. Mary Ann runs away from her midlife crisis, which was caused by her picture-perfect life in Connecticut. She quickly finds herself back in the orbit of Anna Madrigal, her chosen family, and a new generation of young gay people who live at 28 Barbary Lane.
