A spaceship from another world made an emergency landing in Emery's hometown when she was just six years old. It made little difference whether they came in peace or with more sinister intentions; a furious war broke out as humans fought for control over their new adversaries, an alien species known as the Atrians. In the middle of the fighting, Roman, an Atrian kid of six years old, made his way to a shed behind Emery's house. There, she provided him with food, solace, and friendship while also providing him with temporary protection from the dangers of the fighting. After ten years on Earth, the Atrians have become accustomed to the way of life here, but they are still quarantined in a facility known as the Sector, which is under heavy security, so that they can be kept apart from humans. Now, for the very first time, a group of Atrian teenagers will enroll in a suburban high school attended by humans, with the intention of proving the viability of human and alien integration. Emery and Roman run into each other once more at a school and in a culture that mistrusts everything that is associated with the Atrians. While the world around them boils over with hatred and bigotry, the two of them forge a connection that grows ever more powerful and perilous.
