Spooks: Code 9 is a drama series about counter-intelligence that first aired on BBC Three in the year 2008. Jane Tranter, the head of BBC Fiction, wanted to create a spin-off of their long-running drama Spooks that would offer a "more maverick, younger perspective" and attract viewers between the ages of 16 and 24. She requested that the series be commissioned. A gang of six youthful fresh recruits to MI5 who "follow a different rule book" are the protagonists of this series. Independent production company Kudos was responsible for its creation, and filming took place in and around the cities of Leeds and Bradford. The first two episodes were shown for the first time on BBC Three on August 10, 2008, and then they were shown again the next day on the same channel on August 11. It was a contentious decision to connect the new production to the first season of Spooks. Actress Georgia Moffett even went so far as to claim that doing so is "somewhat deceptive in terms of the phrase Spooks." Chris Fry, the producer, is quoted as saying "This is an entirely brand-new television show. There are no characters or plots from other series that crossover into this one, and most crucially, it takes place in an entirely new planet." Karen Wilson, the executive producer, stated that many of the existing cast members had been "contracted for another year" and specified topics that "we'd like to explore if we receive a second series." This was said after the first series was a largely unsatisfactory endeavor.
