Punishment is an Australian television soap opera that aired on the Ten Network in 1981 and was created by the Reg Grundy Organisation. The series, set in a fictional men's jail, sought to portray a male version of the popular soap Prisoner. Punishment was instilled with increased reality in an attempt by the show's creators to differentiate the series from Prisoner; nonetheless, the formula did not garner high viewing statistics. After only three episodes, Network Ten declared the new show a failure, and it was soon withdrawn off the schedule. Later that year, the remaining 26 episodes were broadcast outside of ratings. The series was taped with a single camera, which was unusual for a soap opera. Brian Wenzel, Barry Crocker, Michael Preston, Ross Thompson, Anne Haddy, George Spartels, Cornelia Frances, Lisa Peers, and Julie McGregor were among the regular cast members. In the first episode, Mel Gibson played a prisoner. Kris McQuade played Gibson's character's girlfriend and was replaced after the first few episodes owing to Gibson's departure. Alan Coleman was the show's producer and director.
