Mr. Selfridge chronicles the life of the flamboyant and imaginative American who founded Selfridge's, London's extravagant department store. Harry Gordon Selfridge ('Mile a Minute Harry'), a man on a mission to make shopping as exciting as sex, is introduced in London in1909, when women were delighting in a newfound feeling of independence and modernity. Harry, who was innovative and daring and possessed an almost crazy energy, developed a retail theater where any fresh, fascinating, entertaining, or unusual topic or trend could be displayed.
