The American sitcom Love & War ran on CBS from September 21, 1992, to February 1, 1995. Diane English made the show, and at first, Susan Dey played Wally Porter, a restaurant owner in Chicago, and Jay Thomas played Jack Stein, a sportswriter with whom she had an on-again, off-again relationship. But after the first season, the show was changed, and Dey was fired because the producers said she and Thomas had "no chemistry." Annie Potts took her place as Dana Palladino, who bought Porter's restaurant and started dating Jack. In the first season, there were also times when Jack or Wally broke the fourth wall and talked directly to the camera, usually to talk about an emotional crisis. In later seasons, this rule was taken out. In one episode, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David showed up as themselves as a way to say "thank you" to the show's creator, Diane English, for letting Kramer play the main character's secretary in a short scene on Murphy Brown in an episode of Seinfeld. Suzie Plakson, Joanna Gleason, Joel Murray, Charles Robinson, and Michael Nouri all had small roles on the show. John Hancock, who used to play a judge on L.A. Law with Susan Dey, played bartender Ike for the first half of season one until he died of a heart attack in late 1992. After that, his death was written into the show, and actor Charlie Robinson took his place.
