Open Mike Productions' Lead Balloon is a BBC Four television programme. Comedy duo Jack Dee and Pete Sinclair developed and co-wrote the show. Dee plays Rick Spleen, a cynical and misanthropic comedian whose life is filled with minor annoyances, disappointments, and embarrassments. Sean Power, Tony Gardner, and Raquel Cassidy also star. The first six episodes of the series aired on BBC Four in2006, with the first episode garnering the channel's greatest ratings for a comedy. The series was broadcast on BBC Two and BBC HD in repeats, reaching a wider audience. In November2007, BBC Two broadcasted an eight-episode second season, and in November2008, a third series premiered. On BBC Two, the fourth and final season premiered on May31, 2011 and ended on July5, 2011. Critics compared Lead Balloon to the successful American comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm, and the characters, particularly Magda, the Eastern European housekeeper, received favorable feedback. In November2007, the first season's DVD was released. The show's theme song is a cover of Noel Gallagher's "One Way Road," which Paul Weller sang.
