Jack Roosevelt Robinson rose from humble beginnings to cross baseball's color line and become one of America's most beloved figures. Robinson, a staunch integrationist, utilized his enormous celebrity to speak out against the bigotry he witnessed on and off the field, infuriating fans, the press, and even teammates who had formerly praised him for "turning the other cheek." After baseball, he became a highly read newspaper columnist, contentious political crusader, and dedicated civil rights campaigner, but he battled to stay relevant as diabetes damaged his body and a new generation of leaders charted a more aggressive course for the civil rights movement.
