Saichi Sugimoto is a courageous soldier who fought in the Russo-Japanese War and gained the moniker "Sugimoto the Immortal." When he is ejected from the army for a certain occurrence, battle awards are of little value to him, but he has a mission to accomplish and a commitment to keep, and he will need money to do so. His initial thought was to join the latest gold rush in Hokkaido and try his luck, but fate had a more interesting and lucrative challenge in store for him. His eyes light up as a strange man describes how a burglar stole a significant quantity of gold from a bunch of Ainu and then hid it. Is this story false? The man informs him that the only way to discover the stolen riches is to contact a number of individuals who were incarcerated with the thief and who have the footprints tattooed on their bodies.
