Ellen ran for 109 episodes on ABC from March29, 1994 to July22, 1998. Ellen DeGeneres played a neurotic bookshop owner in her 30s. The show focused on Ellen's interactions with her eccentric friends, family, and everyday difficulties. In the 1997 episode "Puppy Episode," DeGeneres' character came out as gay. This occurrence got a lot of media attention, sparked controversy, and caused ABC to add a parental alert. Texas' "So Called Friend" serves as the series' theme music. The fact that each episode featured its own opening credits sequence was a recurring humor, originating from Ellen's never-ending search for the perfect opening credits.
