Andrew Davies adapted the George Eliot novel of the same name into a British television serial drama, Daniel Deronda. Tom Hooper directed the series, which was produced by Louis Marks and first aired on BBC One in three parts from November 23 to December7, 2002. Hugh Dancy portrayed Daniel Deronda, Romola Garai portrayed Gwendolen Harleth, Hugh Bonneville portrayed Henleigh Grandcourt, and Jodhi May portrayed Mirah Lapidoth in the television series. The WGBH Boston provided co-production funds. After a protracted and failed casting procedure, Louis Marks decided to forgo his plan to make a film adaptation of the novel. It took another five years for the drama to be broadcast on television. Filming took place in England, Scotland, and Malta over 11 weeks from May to August. Before his death in 2010, Marks' final television project was the series.
