Astronomers Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan and Steven Soter wrote and presented the thirteen-part television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. In addition to being produced by David Kennard, Geoffrey Haines-Stiles, and Gregory Andorfer, the film was directed by a number of the production team members including David Oyster, Richard Wells, and Tom Weidlinger. Many scientific topics were addressed, including how the cosmos came to be and how we fit in. Since its debut in1980, the series has been the most-watched public television series in the United States until the Civil War. A PBS series, "The Great American Library," was still the most popular in the world in 2009. Over 500 million people have seen it since it was broadcast in over 60 countries, winning an Emmy and Peabody Award. In addition to the television series, a book was also released.
